Yet another awesome page!
Now that you mention it, Nora and Mao do look remarkably similar, especially when they’re drawn with few facial features like in panel 4. Obviously Mao’s got the whole pillar thing going on, but in panels where they’re blocked by foreground objects it’s a little awkward to look and see if there are pigtails or not. Different outfits would be very helpful–maybe it’s unavoidable since they’re both from the same monastery (at least I think they are. They’re from the same something, and Mao stole from the monastery), but two characters with poofy blonde hair is a bit confusing.
And the compliment: I really love the character design of the bad guys. They’ve big muscular chests and unbelievably large arms for strength, and then these skinny little legs that give a great impression of overly specialized strength.
…And only just now looking back did I realize Nora’s got some sort of elbow and knee guards, coupled with shorter sleeves. Maybe I’m a bit unobservant, but it does seem like there are precious few differences in costume. Basically, for a relic-stealing troublemaker, Mao sure dresses conservatively.
I intentionally wanted to challenge myself with this book to draw action scenes, something that I don’t think I was known for on my creed books or ghost rider. I really appreciate your very detailed feedback. And once I’ve reached a certain point in the story, I intend to go back and improve sequences like this one to incorporate exactly these issues. I hope it doesn’t discourage you from still reading! I consider this whole project an opportunity to develop new skills in storytelling. So comments like this are extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to write all of that out!
